Yoonhee Ha, a John Glenn Fellow during the Spring of 2005, is one of 43 students nationwide selected as a 2007 Marshall Scholar. Ms. Ha is the first Ohio State student chosen for this scholarship since 1997 and the only Ohio State student ever to have won both the Marshall and the Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Recipients of the Marshall Scholarship are provided with two years of study at a British university of their choosing, courtesy of the British government. The program began in 1953 as a gesture of thanks to the people of the United States for the assistance received after World War II under the Marshall Plan. Truman Scholars (75 chosen nationwide in 2006) receive a $30,000 scholarship and are selected based upon outstanding academic achievement and a demonstrated commitment to public service.
Ms. Ha is pursuing a double major in microbiology and finance, and a double minor in Korean and political science. Upon completion of her undergraduate degrees, she will study public health at the University of London’s School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Her goal is to become a physician so that she may address the healthcare needs of the underserved in the United States and in developing countries.
While a member of the John Glenn Institute’s Washington Academic Internship Program, Ms. Ha completed a 10 week internship at the American Cancer Society in their National Government Relations Department. Her independent research resulted in a policy paper titled, “Snuffing Out Youth Tobacco Use Before It Begins,” which addressed the dangers of smoking and how education and peer pressure can assist in smoking cessation. Her case study focused largely on the tremendous problem of teenage smoking among youths and teens in the Washington, D.C. region.
Daniel Janyes, a John Glenn Fellow during the Winter of 2004, is one of the co-authors of "Can SEER be Saved?" Mr. Jaynes contributed to this paper when he interned with ACEEE during the winter quarter of 2004 as a John Glenn Fellow. His policy paper was titled, “Energy Efficiency and Conservation: A Closer Look.” He graduated from OSU in June of 2005 with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Political Science. Currently, Mr. Jaynes is enrolled in a Wind Energy Engineering program at the University of Massachusetts.
